Being a native of Florida and having had the opportunity to visit the affected areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama over the years, I can assure everyone that the weather there in temperature and humidity is not much fun. Couple the present weather situation with the flooding and wind damage and to me it's a challenge just getting my arms around the magnitude of the devastation. Help will be needed in the short-term as well as over the long-term.
I have no doubt that many of you have made decisions on how to help. There are many worthwhile organizations, charities, and churches available to all of us.
We'll be supporting the following charities and ask that you consider these along with your other choices:
The Little Stuff Fund. Susan Ipri Brown and her family started this charity. Their primary goal is to provide help with education—something the children from the Hurricane Katrina region will need. I met Susan and her husband Caryl years ago through the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Since I'm a member of the Little Stuff Fund's Board of Directors, I know that Susan and her family's hearts are in the right place.

American Red Cross. Much has been written about how these folks are the first in line to respond to disasters.

Habitat for Humanity. I've been a construction volunteer with this organization for over 15 years and a volunteer member of the Finance Committee for the Detroit chapter for 7 years. Habitat is in the process of formulating their long-term response to helping folks once again obtain affordable housing in the Hurricane Katrina region.
