U.S. Analog to Digital TV Converter Deadline:  2008 March 31

2008 January 1

On 2009 February 17, anyone viewing free analog TV in the U.S. (those of us with an antenna on our roofs or “rabbit ears” on our TVs) will have nothing to look at anymore.

Gone will be the genius TV programs, the networks, and the wonderful ads for ointment that we all so love.

Why?

That’s the day when the original analog TV spectrum get’s officially reallocated to others for things like digital TV, emergency service communications, and cell phones.

What to do?

If you have cable, satellite or other digital TV services—no need to worry.  The vast majority of these services will have options available for you such as a conversion box.  Call them before the deadline and make sure that you’ll have a smooth transition.  You know everyone will be waiting until the last minute, so call them by 2008 March 31.

If you already have a TV that has a digital tuner, you should be fine.

For those of us who have analog TVs with analog tuners (the estimate is that 20% of U.S. households have this type of TV), here’s what you need to do if you don’t want to purchase a new digital TV:

1) You’ll need a “digital to analog TV signal converter” for each of your analog TVs.

2) The U.S. government has a coupon valued at $40 per converter for use at retail stores such as Circuit City and Radio Shack.  But, you must apply for the coupon before 2008 March 31.

3) So get going and apply online, it’s easy.  Click on www.dtv2009.gov
