New Years Resolutions

With the convergence of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa in 2005, the glut of the corporate "Holiday" advertising campaigns once again attempted to turn an already muddled season of reflection into gray mush.
But there's hope: A growing group of folks are rejecting the "WalMartization" of this season. This year, many people have refocused on the underlying spirit of giving back to their communities, sharing time with family and friends, and the religious and spiritual reasons for these celebrations.
I believe that the trend will continue in 2006. What may be bad for the superstores could be good for local stores as people reduce the quantity of their gifts and instead take the time to select more meaningful gifts for their loved ones.
A great example of this renewed spirit comes from my friend Andrew Pritchard. Andrew is the owner of Inspire Consulting, a business that helps small businesses gain more clients via marketing and the web www.inspire-consulting.com. This year, he calculated that he would spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars sending out holiday greetings cards to his family, friends and clients. Instead, he sent a nice E-mail wishing my family well and noted that the money he saved would be donated to a charity.
Combine all of these positive steps and there’s real hope in recapturing the true spirit of this season.
