Does the United Nations have any value?

As I continue to learn more and more about the Rwanda genocide I am reminded once again that the U.N., when it shows up in areas that need its help, tends to wait until the local Hilton Hotel has been rebuilt. Then the procedure appears to be: We'll send in a few good soldiers and then ensure that their hands are politically tied so that they are powerless to do anything positive about the situation.

This all reminds me of the nightmare in Yugoslavia where I had friends in the military stationed there and family nearby: With the same signature results of the U.N. as in Rwanda.

In an interview with the BBC, Secretary General Kofi Annan has said he could and should have done more to stop the genocide in Rwanda 10 years ago. But nothing appears to be changing in its structure or the black hole of its various regulatory bodies.

After 60 years of failure, does the world need the U.N?
